A common design incorporates a gold five-pointed star, often accented with clover motifs. Measuring approximately one inch in diameter, the star is frequently encircled by a wreath of green laurel leaves. Suspended above it is a small plaque bearing the word “VALOR,” upon which an eagle is depicted with wings outspread.
The central profile of Minerva appears within the star, encircled by the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” Each point of the star may feature a small oak leaf cluster. Opposite the “VALOR” plaque, another small panel is engraved with the phrase “THE CONGRESS TO,” followed by an intentionally blank space reserved for engraving the recipient’s name.
Within military protocol, awards and badges are worn as distinct groupings. On the dress uniform, they are positioned on the right side and arranged in rows from the wearer’s right to left.
